จาก Moore’s Law ซึ่งกล่าวไว้ว่า ศักยภาพของ computer chip นั้นจะเพิ่มขึ้นแบบทวีคูณทุกๆ 18-24 เดือน จากข้อความดังกล่าวทำให้อนุมานโดยสรุปได้ว่า ลูกค้ามีโอกาสมากขึ้นที่จะซื้อcomputer chip ที่มีประสิทธิภาพ ในราคาถูก เมื่อเวลาผ่านไป เพราะ Price to performance ratio ของสินค้าประเภท IT นั้นจะมีลักษณะที่จะลดลงแบบ exponential แต่อย่างไรก็ดี ถึงแม้ว่า บริษัทจะมี IT ที่มีศักยภาพตลอดจนมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น มันก็ยังคงเป็นเรื่องยากที่จะระบุได้ว่า IT Investmentนั้นสามารถเพิ่ม productivity ได้จริงๆ ซึ่งจุดนี้เองทำให้เกิด Productivity Paradox (ความขัดแย้งทางผลิตภาพ)
หมายเหตุ Productivity Paradox นั้นมองมากกว่าแค่การเพิ่มขององค์กร แต่ยังรวมไปถึงในกรณีของการเพิ่ม productivity ของทั้งระบบเศรษฐกิจด้วย
โดยสาเหตุของ Productivity Paradox นั้นได้แก่

อย่างไรก็ดี ในแง่ของ firm แล้ว productivity paradox จะ matter ก็ต่อเมื่อ productivity ของ firm ไม่เพิ่มขึ้นเท่านั้น
